# Calculate the power loss and heat generation of an electrical distribution board

Do you, as a system integrator or panel builder, need to calculate the power loss and heat generation of a distribution board, for example to comply with standard IEC 61934? Not only do TDS interfaces consume very little energy, you also calculate in a very short time how much heat they develop in your distribution board.

The lifespan of electronics in a distribution board depends greatly on the ambient temperature. For every 10 °C that you exceed the maximum ambient temperature, the life span of some electronic products decreases by half.
That temperature, in turn, is partly determined by the heat developed by all products installed in the distribution board.

## Minimal heat generation

To begin with, TDS interfaces require very little energy and therefore develop very limited heat. For example, the TDS13512 relay interface (8 x 10 A switching capability with inrush currents up to 8 x 65 A) consumes a maximum of 1.74 W with all eight relays continuously on. But it gets better: the eight bistable relays of the TDS13510 (8 x 16 A with inrush currents of 8 x 100 A) consume no power at all, even when switched on. The entire interface therefore consumes a maximum of 0.4 W with all eight relays ON, with equal maximum heat dissipation.

So the TDS13510 is actually always recommended, especially for controlling sustained switched-on circuits. In other words, a system integrator or panel builder should use the TDS13512 only when the connected electrical load is off for most of the time. Think of impulse outputs for controlling a gate, garden sprinkler valves, lighting in briefly visited rooms like staircases, etc...

So, the TDS interfaces require very little to hardly no energy and develop hardly any heat.
